You embark on a new business. You plan to sell products and services through your website. You shop around and find a merchant provider that appears to give you the best deal. The rates are low so you sign a long-term contract.

When you get your first statement, however, you notice several fees you weren’t aware of. Setup fees, annual fees, software fees, batch fees, and so on. You realize that maybe your deal wasn’t so great after all, but you can’t leave. You’re in a contract.

Here’s the ugly truth: Because there are so many different rates and fees involved in having a merchant account, some businesses end up paying more than they expected.

Here’s five easy steps you can take to safeguard yourself when shopping around for a merchant account:

1. Have a basic understanding of how merchant processing fees and rates work.

For many of us, when we think of rates and fees for a merchant account, we only think of the ones directly associated with the credit card swipe. As such, merchant providers will only advertise those particular fees prominently on their websites and/or brochures. This includes the qualified discount rate and sometimes the per item fee.

These, of course, are not the only fees associated with having a merchant account. Other common fees include the gateway fee, monthly minimum fees, annual fees, cancellation fees, batch fees, set up fees, pass through fees, over limit fees, voice authorization fees, software fees, statement fees, customer or technical support fees, and more.

2. Ask for details and an explanation on all fees.

When you receive your merchant application, ask for an explanation for all of the fees listed, including if they are recurring, one-time, or penalties.

Hidden fees are almost always hidden in plain sight. So if you see a fee you don’t understand or a fee that you haven’t received an adequate explanation for, demand more information. And don’t be afraid to explicitly ask whether there are any fees involved that are not listed on your application.

3. If a merchant provider offers to waive any of your fees, ask for it in writing.

Don’t take their word for it. If a special arrangement is made over the phone, especially if they offer to waive any fees, be sure to get it in writing.

4. Understand the terms of your contract.

How long are you locked into your contract? What’s the cancellation fee? These are essential items you’ll need to consider before signing anything.

5. Compare with Newtek.

If your looking for a merchant account, don’t forget that Newtek has been helping businesses with their ecommerce and merchant needs for over a decade. NewtPay, which is our special merchant product designed for online merchants, features no start up costs, no monthly fees, competitive rates, and no contract.

So, if you’re starting an online business, no doubt someone…somewhere…has mentioned “SSL”. It may have been in a casual, inquisitive manner, or it may have been a more frantic “you got a SSL certificate, right? Oh…you HAVE to get a SSl certificate or all of your customer data will be stolen!”

The purpose of this post is to allay some of the fear and uncertainly about SSL and give a short primer on what it is, what it means, and what the differences are between the various alternatives.

SSL – What Is It, and Why Do I Need It?

Put simply, a SSL certificate is used to create a secure, encrypted link between a person’s browser and the web server used to host the page they’re on. The encrypted connection ensures that any data that is transferred from the browser to the web server – for example, when someone fills out a form – remains private during transmission. The certificate is provided by a “Certifying Authority” (CA) like VeriSign or Trustwave (though there are many others), and is most commonly associated with the lock icon that appears in the browser window when someone visits a secured page.

SSL is important because it gives visitors to a secured page of your website “peace of mind” knowing that the information they are inputting on that page is encrypted and not traveling in plain text. Therefore, the potential for that data to be usable should it fall into the wrong hands is greatly, greatly reduced.

What Types of SSL Are There?

Shared SSL
This means that your hosting provider has (usually) purchased a SSL certificate that can be used by multiple people. This generally works by attaching the SSL to a generic domain (though some hosting providers use their own domain), then providing customers with a path to use for encrypting the connection for their individual sites. An example of a shared SSL path would be https://www3.ssldomain.com/customer-domain-name/page-name.html.

Great For:
1. New sites just getting started.
2. Basic forms.

Not So Great For:
1. Ecommerce
2. Any form asking for extremely personal information (e.g., social security number)

  Dedicated SSL
This is where you purchase a SSL certificate for YOUR domain. The pathing for secured pages when using a dedicated SSL certificate is really not different than any other page of your site, except for the “S” – https://www.your-domain.com.

Great For:
1. Any use – form information, credit card purchases, FTP access – anything you want to secure and encrypt on your site.

Not So Great For:
1. Some may argue larger scale purchases (in the tens of thousands of dollars), but that’s just because there is an alternative, and it is….

  Extended Validation (EV)
This is a new type of SSL that entails a greater degree of authentication and validation by the CA. The benefit to an EV certificate is that the CA has to go through many more steps prior to issuing an EV certificate. Some of these steps entail a physical visit to the requestor’s location and a signed letter by an executive of the company (usually a CFO or some designee); therefore, quite a bit more than is needed for a standard SSL certificate.

Great For:
1. Large ticket items, generally in the thousands of dollars per item.
2. A company wanting to prove its commitment to security.

Not Great For:
1. Anyone without deep pockets. As this certificate entails a bit more labor on the part of the CA, they are a “bit” more expensive.

Finally, a quick word on “Premium” and “Enterprise” SSL certificates. Some companies sell different levels of certificates, and they’re usually labeled something like “premium” vs. “enterprise”, or even “enterprise” vs. “premium enterprise”. The difference between these certificates generally comes down to bit level encryption and/or level of warranty provided by the CA. The CA may even attach some identification scheme to prove the level of security offered, add scanning services, real-time authentication, etc. There are pluses and minuses to all of this, so use your best judgement when deciding what you want to pay for. A good, solid SSL certificate issued by a reliable provider is fine for most companies. If you really want to prove your level of commitment, then adding services is a good idea and may be worth the additional cost.

So there you have it: a decent primer on SSL. This is, of course, not a complete breakdown of SSL, much less a discussion of the technology behind SSL. So, if you have additional questions, please feel free to ask us – we’re here to help! As an aside, Newtek Web Services provides a dedicated SSL certificate on our Storefront Builder plan, and SSL can be added to the Website Builder or any custom site build.

We all know that in the business world, it’s never easy being the little guy. Not only can the Goliaths in your industry beat you in price just about every single time, they probably have first quarter marketing budgets ten times your annual revenue.

But one of the biggest advantages the big guys have over small businesses (fair or not) is assumed credibility. They’re big, so they must know their stuff.

Let’s face it, most of us would probably like to support a small, local business over a big box corporation if given the option, but for a lot of people, it’s still going to be a little scary trusting a company that operates out of a spare bedroom over a company with a nice, flashy office in Manhattan.

So what do you do when faced with this challenge?

Do what the Frilled Lizard does: pretend you’re bigger.

If you’re not familiar with the odd little lizard from Down Under, it’s famous for its large ruff of skin that flares out when it feels threatened, making itself look substantially bigger and more fierce than it really is.

So in order to compete with the big guys, don’t be afraid to do a little pretending yourself. Here’s 3 easy ways your small business can be like the Frilled Lizard:

1. Get a business phone line with business features.

If you don’t want clients to necessarily know you’re a one or two-person shop, having a business phone line with a recorded message and menu options will immediately give them a sense that you’re a much bigger business.

I know what you’re thinking, I can’t afford a fancy business phone line. Well, maybe you can.

If you own a cell phone—and I’m guessing you do as a recent survey suggests that one-fifth of small business owners feel they could not survive without their mobile devices—why not put it to work as your business line as well? For example, there’s a fantastic new application for the iPhone called Line2.

The New York Times described the business benefits of Line2 best:

Line2 offers a raft of features that are intended to help a small business look bigger: call screening, Do Not Disturb hours and voice mail messages sent to you as e-mail. You can create an “automated attendant” – “Press 1 for sales,” Press 2 for accounting,” and so on – that routes incoming calls to other phone numbers.

As an iPhone app, you can manage your second phone number all through your iPhone. The best thing about Line2 for small business owners: it’s only $15 a month.

If you don’t own an iPhone, you still have some great options. Google Voice, which will be widely available to the public soon, offers flexible features like do not disturb, call forwarding, call screening, transcribed voicemail, and more. Google Voice will be supported on most Android handsets (you may need to check with your wireless carrier to be sure they support it, too). For non-iPhone or Android users, you may want to consider a virtual office or phone system service, such as Grasshopper.com, which offers both toll-free and local numbers, unlimited extensions, forwarding, and voicemails by email.

2. Move beyond PayPal

In the early days of the Internet, the idea of using a credit card to buy something on the web felt a little like playing Russian roulette. Then PayPal came along and helped us get more comfortable with the idea of buying online.

These days, of course, using a credit card online is pretty much second nature. Not only are ecommerce websites more secure, but most credit cards now have built-in protections for online purchases.

As such, it’s probably time for your business to move beyond PayPal. Don’t get me wrong, PayPal is still popular and convenient for some shoppers, but it’s no longer the standard payment option offered online. If anything, most reputable ecommerce websites that accept PayPal offer it in addition to major credits card.

But you might be thinking, How can my little business qualify for a merchant account?

Well, although it’s fairly easy to acquire a PayPal merchant account, you’d be surprised how easy it is to get a real merchant account, too. So you might want to check it out. Unfortunately, by only accepting PayPal in 2010, you run the risk of coming off as “small time.”

As an additional tip, be sure to use a dedicated SSL certificate when setting up your ecommerce site—using a shared SSL will also reek of small time. Although a shared certificate will encrypt transactions just as effectively as a dedicated one, there’s a notable difference. With a shared SSL, the URL will change to a different address (the address the shared SSL is assigned to) when a shopper enters the secured area of your site. This is a huge red flag for savvy online shoppers and may make them think twice before entering their payment information.

3. Get fancy with your email address

A couple years ago, around the time Bret Favre “retired” from the Green Bay Packers, I went online to see how much it would cost to get a signed Favre jersey. I quickly found a sports memorabilia shop in Florida that actually had one I could afford.

I’ve never been to Florida, so I didn’t have any expectation of ever hearing of this shop before, but the website was nice and it appeared legitimate. But I had some questions about the jersey, so I went to the “about us” page to get an email address. The email address was a Yahoo! Account.

This scared me off, and I didn’t end up buying the Jersey.

Unfortunately, if you’re running your own business, nothing will reek more of small time (or worse, not credible) than having a email address from a free email service provider. If you have a website for your business (and if you don’t, that, too, will come off as small time) check with your hosting company or webmaster to see how you can get one. Services like Gmail also have options to use your own domain.

Here’s a couple more Frilled Lizard tricks you might want to consider regarding your business email account:

Create a nice auto-responder to acknowledge that you received their email, and to set an expectation on how long it will take for you to get back to them.

Create email addresses, or alias addresses, for different roles (i.e. sales@, support@, feedback@, etc.).

Append a professional-looking signature on all emails, including on all replies. This should include your title, business phone number, and email address.

Well, there you have it. Looking bigger couldn’t be easier. If you’re a small business owner, let us know about any tricks you use to appear “bigger.” For everyone else, let us know what you think. Is it important for your business to appear bigger in order to be considered credible? Let us know in the comments below.

On one hand, there are ecommerce websites—businesses that sell products and/or services online.

And then you have content-driven websites—businesses that either create or curate content on the web, such as news sites, blogs, and even social media spots like YouTube and Facebook.

For content-driven websites, or even content in print, for that matter, monetization is typically limited to advertising—the selling of ad space. This model, however, leaves businesses at the mercy of a fickle advertising market, which has been in a substantial recession since last spring.

So what’s a content provider to do?

The New York Times will be moving toward a subscription-based model for its web content next year. But what if you’re not a big shot like the New York Times—the paper of record? Sure, millions may be willing to pay a flat fee to read Times content, but what about your blog?

This all brings me to an interesting panel discussion I attended at South by Southwest Interactive last week, called “Merch – The Other White Meat of Monetization.”

In a nutshell, the panelists, including Mikhail Ledvich of BustedTees.com, discussed the benefits, and challenges, of content-driven websites moving toward a merchandising model as a source of additional revenue. For those of you who may not be familiar with BustedTees.com, this website actually began as an effort to further monetize its sister website, CollegeHumor.com.

If your content-driven website has a dedicated or passionate audience, selling merchandise can give your readers a way to be active “patrons of the arts,” so to speak, for your content, in much the same way fans actively support CollegeHumor by purchasing funny t-shirts from BustedTees.

So if selling merchandise, or merch, seems like something your content-driven business would like to do, here’s a quick checklist of things to consider.

1. Have something worthwhile to sell

If you have a comedy blog, selling funny t-shirts makes sense, but if your blog is about, say, food culture in southern California, you may want to consider regional cookbooks or something that is naturally connected to the content of your blog.

2. Add a shop page or shopping cart to your site

BustedTees.com might be a separate website from CollegeHumor.com, but this doesn’t mean you’ll need a whole new website just to sell merchandise. Contact your web master to see how you can add a shopping cart to your site. This can be as easy as installing a cart application, like Newtek Cart, to your hosting account.

3. Get a low-fee Merchant Account to process payments

If this is your first stab at ecommerce, you’ll want to minimize your cost by going with a payment solution that doesn’t kill you with fees. Avoid solutions that come with annual or start up fees. Check out our NewtPay & NewPay Pro merchant solutions.

So what do you think of “merch” as an option to bring in additional revenue for content-driven websites? If you’re already selling products from your content-based site, let us know about your experiences.

If you’re a loyal NPR listener, are married to your New York Times subscription or even a casual CNN viewer, you already know that small businesses are expected to be the underdog champions of <a href="http://newtekwebservices.com/blog/wp-content/plugins/feed-statistics.php?url=aHR0cDovL29ubGluZS53c2ouY29tL2FydGljbGUvU0IxMDAwMTQyNDA1Mjc0ODcwNDAyMjgwNDU3NTA0MDcyMjk1NTc4NDI5NC5odG1sP21vZD1yc3NfVG9kYXk="s_Most_Popular\">the economic recovery.

As every small business owner knows, selecting the right merchant processing plan will weigh heavily on 2010 growth.

There are many merchant processing providers available to you, which is why it’s important to cut through the clutter quickly. In the interest of narrowing your options efficiently, we’ve identified five questions you need to prospective processing providers before making a decision:

How satisfied are your customers?
If you’re looking for a long-term solution, this one is important. Don’t be afraid to ask for references from current customers, and search the potential provider’s website for testimonials. Your best advocates in this search are your fellow customers. And if you are handling the back-end aspect of your site yourself, or have a consultant doing it for you, these additional bonuses would be incredibly nice to have: a comprehensive developer library for quick troubleshooting and constant access to customer support (see #2 for more).

Will you be there for me 24/7/365?
Many times, when things go wrong, they don’t happen between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you operate a 24-hour business and you experience a glitch at 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning, it’s essential that your provider be available 24/7/365 to you to help you through the issue promptly.

Are your rates competitive with other solutions?
This is a tricky one as you need to search for the right balance when it comes to rates and fees. If fees seem excessively low, and it looks too good to be true, trust your gut because it probably is. On the flip side, for businesses traditionally viewed as “high risk” (those like travel and tourism businesses that rely almost exclusively on advanced booking), you’ll want to ensure you receive a fair assessment all the way down the line, from gateway fees to transaction fees. Look for a provider that will provide rates that can easily compete with most popular gateways, and ask if they’ll provide a complimentary cost analysis if you provide your statement. And above all, be leery of any provider that locks you into a contract or charges a cancellation fee, both of which are non-existent with Newtek.

Will your payment solution integrate easily with my website?
Again, whether you’re handling the back-end yourself or have hired a consultant to do it for you, this one is incredibly important. If I had to guess, you (or your technical consultant) don’t have time to go looking around for documentation on integrating the payment solution into your custom shopping cart. Sign on with a provider that will readily provide access to web service support in .NET, PHP and more. (If any of these terms are foreign to you, you’re not alone. Click here.)

How quickly will I (or my client) have access to transaction funds?
The goal of any ecommerce plan is to make the sale and see the funds hit your bank account, right? Before committing to working with any merchant processing provider, be sure to inquire about the speed of the process. With some providers it may take 4 to 5 days to see the funds hit, whereas many other programs (like NewtPay) deliver funds in as few as 48 hours. Cash flow is vital to any growth plan, so fund availability is an important factor to include in the decision-making process.

These five questions will help you find a solution that will inevitable become an integral piece of your growth plan in 2010. This list is in no way complete, but rather provides a baseline for early research. In your opinion, what other factors should be considered in identifying and implementing a merchant processing plan? Help us add to the list in the comments below…

In a time of Do-It-Yourself projects, anything is possible - even building your own website. Take a look to see three reasons you should give a DIY website builder a try.

We’ve become an increasingly self-reliant society. Ten years ago, instead of installing new flooring ourselves, we would have called in the professionals to do it for us. This is not to say that everyone opts to go with the DIY route (when it comes to manual labor I certainly don’t), but the point is, it’s become a viable option in just about every area of our lives.

One company exemplifies this “DIY” movement. We’re all familiar with the incredibly popular Home Depot tagline, “You can do it. We can help.” Brilliant. In the wake of their success, many other companies have adopted the DIY concept, empowering their customers to get their own hands a bit dirty, with the expertise and backing of the providing company – a safety net of sorts.

So you still don’t have a website? Why not?

That same level of autonomy and empowerment is spilling into the online marketplace, which is why it’s surprising that 60% of small businesses still don’t have a website. This figure is according to a recent 2009 study conducted by Discover® Small Business Watch.SM

While I’m sure there are a million different reasons why businesses are NOT online (too busy, focused on building traffic to their brick-and-mortar stores, etc.), with the emergence of DIY website builders, the reasons keeping business owners from taking their business online are diminishing. So without further ado…

Three reasons why you should give a DIY website builder a go:

It’s time already!
Perhaps you have a successful brick-and-mortar business and you’ve grown entirely by word of mouth. If you have, congratulations! WOM marketing is one of the best types of marketing and speaks volumes about the quality of your business. Take that success and apply it online. You’re poised to hit an untapped pool of customers who (shockingly) have not yet heard of your company or establishment. The time for modesty has passed, friends. If your customers and critics are saying nice things about you, tell the world. After all, your mother can only do so much…

Get your goods online
Whether you’re an independent artist, a mom-and-pop shop, freelance consultant or a multi-location small business owner, your products and services have a very limited reach if only available in-store or through networking events if you’re a professional services freelancer. DIY builders make it easy to get your products online quickly. If you’ve got products to seel, you can have them up and available to a much wider base within minutes. Once your bottom line starts to soar, you’ll be glad you made the push for Ecommerce.

Chance to be artistic – no graphic design education required
No one knows your business better than you, so who better to reflect that visually? With a multitude of different design schemes to select from, (we offer more than 700) you can bring your vision to life, and let the builder carry out all of the necessary back-end coding and programming. So, really, by using a website builder you can get a personally designed site up and running quickly and skip out on four years of classroom time (not to mention the painful remnants of student loans that still haunt many of us.) Best of all, with most builders, while you get to play with the look and feel and overall design of your site, you’ll still have access to a team of professionals available 24/7/365 to assist you

So there you have it: Three excellent reasons to give a DIY Website Builder a try (even better if you can try it out for free.) Honorable mentions include:

The ability to change your content on a whim rather than having to coordinate with a designer and wait for the next website publish window

A chance to really peel back the curtain and connect with your customers by adding a company blog that embodies your unique corporate culture

Websites are an easy place to point customers looking for more information, and a handy addition to any business card

Now then. What are you waiting for? It’s 2010. By now you’ve run out of reasons to let another year slip by without establishing a strong web presence. To borrow from a well-known brand that set the stage for the DIY movement, “You can do it. We can help.”

And if DIY isn’t your style, stay tuned. The next blog will discuss why a custom design may be a better choice for you…

Certainly, the reasons you broke ground (or commenced virtual operations) vary across the board, but when it comes to small business owner gripes, the list probably looks a bit similar.

Indeed, getting paid in a timely manner is a two-fold problem. First, getting customers and clients to pay can be an issue in itself. But then there’s also the issue of waiting for the logistics to catch up with the process. Seeing funds hit your account can be a troublesome and patience-sucking hassle.

Merchant processing providers are really starting to step up to the plate, though, and are taking some positive steps to better serve business owners. Typically, it’s taken 4-5 business days to see funds find their way to your eagerly awaiting account, but those days are becoming a thing of the past.

With new options available to you, such as our own program, NewtPay, are you taking advantage? Is your money still traveling on a stage coach or is it keeping up with the times? All I’m saying, friends, is that there are options.

So, per usual, inquiring minds would love to know. Have you dusted off your merchant processing plan recently? If not, what’s stalling you? Besides life in general of course…

Last week our Chairman and CEO, Barry Sloane, shared his thoughts on the financial outlook for small business owners in 2010 during an interview on the Bob Coleman Small Business Banker radio show.

While Barry’s outlook for the economy as a whole remains cautious, he remians optimistic about the financial backing future for small businesses.

Listen to the full interview:

Highlights from the interview include:

A significant increase in lending for small business owners in 2010 versus what was dispersed in 2009

Newtek forecasts its lending division will lend up to $50 million in SBA 7a loans in 2010

The extension of the 2009 Recovery Act provides a great opportunity to further bolster the successful and popular program, which reduces fees and increases guarantees. Read the Wall Street Journal overview here.

Barry stresses the benefit of working with an organization that can meet every need of the small business owner, including lending, ecommerce, web hosting, data storage, insurance and payment processing

We want to hear from the small business owners out there. What do you forsee in 2010? Do you think the stimulus extension will make an impact for your business? Are you planning to invest or grow your business in 2010? Let us know in the comments below.

“E-commerce spending continues to grow faster compared to other retail categories, as more people become comfortable shopping online and also shopping online during the holidays,” Kamalesh Rao, director of economic research for MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, tells PaymentsSource.

This is great news for retailers who sell their products online. According to Master Card advisors, even during a recession, online sales were up 15% over last year. The largest increases were in electronics, jewelry, footwear, and men’s apparel. Many factors contributed to this figure, including the fact that some online stores offered free shipping during the holidays to sweeten the deal.

Given that more young people are becoming savvy online shoppers, coupled with an increased level of confidence in online security from the boomer demographic, the percentage of online sales should continue to grow. These indicators support the fact that retailers who sell online understand the value of ecommerce and return on investment.

Ecommerce is especially important in this market for the following reasons:

Convenience. Customers may not have time to visit your physical store.

Always open. Customers can order products at any time day or night.

Branding. A good website store complements and enhances your positive brand experience.

Credit Card Processing. Accepting credit card payments online makes transactions fast and returns easy.

Marketing. Having a web presence is one of the least expensive ways to stay top-of-mind with your customer base.

There has never been a better time to sell your products and services online than now. In the past, depending on how many products you had to sell and the volume of traffic to your server, setting up an online store would cost anywhere from 5 to 20 thousand dollars. This is because you needed to hire a web developer and web designer to design web graphics and set up your hosting account, merchant account, shopping cart software, database, gateway, SSL, and upload all of your product descriptions and images.

Now you can do all of the above autonomously, essentially bypassing the web developer and web designer. Knowledge of HTML, CSS or any database languages to use our online storefront builder isn’t no longer necessary. Newtek Web Services even offers a FREE trial so you can see how easy it is to set up your store by yourself. PLUS, you get expert assistance 24/7/365. Newtek Web Services is the one-stop-shop for your online needs: websites, online shops, even credit card processing and merchant accounts!
